Electrical Safety: Arc Flash, NFPA 70E and LOTO
Work safely on and near electrical equipment: how shock and arc flash injure, risk assessment, the electrically safe work condition, lockout and tagout, approach boundaries, arc-flash incident energy, PPE categories and labels, energised work permits, live-dead-live testing, and how national rules, with India's CEA 2023 regulations as the worked example, add duties such as an Electrical Safety Officer.

What you will learn
Explain how shock, arc flash and arc blast injure; write a task-based electrical risk assessment using the hierarchy of controls; set out the steps of an electrically safe work condition and a written lockout procedure, including group lockout; read and apply approach boundaries; scale an arc-flash incident energy and find the arc flash boundary; read an arc-flash label and choose and inspect PPE; decide whether energised work is justified and fill in a permit; choose a CAT-rated tester and carry out a live-dead-live test; apply national electrical safety rules, using India's CEA 2023 regulations and IS 5216 as the worked example; and audit, investigate and brief on electrical safety.
- Work out a body current from voltage and resistance and explain shock, arc flash and arc blast
- Write a task-based electrical risk assessment using the hierarchy of controls
- Set out an electrically safe work condition and write a lockout procedure with a group lockout
- Read approach boundaries from a label and barricade an open panel
- Scale an arc-flash incident energy and find the arc flash boundary
- Read an arc-flash label and choose and inspect arc-rated PPE and rubber gloves
- Decide whether energised work is justified and complete an energised work permit
- Choose a CAT-rated tester, test live-dead-live, and apply national rules such as India's CEA 2023 regulations

The course project 路 about 10 hours
A lockout procedure, an energised work permit and an arc-flash label for an MCC feeder at a polymer plant
Act as the maintenance electrical engineer at a polymer plant in Gujarat: write the lockout procedure for one MCC feeder with a group lockout, assess the shock and arc flash risk of five tasks, work the arc-flash label for the MCC from the fault data given, decide whether a live measurement is justified and write its energised work permit, and check the job against the CEA 2023 regulations. The sample pack shows each document for the feeder.
Sample document pack, 5 documents, filled in for the scenario
- ProcedureLockout procedure, MCC-2 feeder F-07, pump P-207 and its VFD
- Risk registerShock and arc flash risk assessment, five tasks on MCC-2 feeder F-07
- ReportArc-flash label for MCC-2 and the maintenance-setting estimate
- PlanEnergised electrical work decision and permit, VFD-207
- RegisterLock register and CEA 2023 compliance check for the F-07 job
Read inside the course and download as a workbook. The project is optional practice, marked when you submit it; the certificate needs only the modules and the final assessment.

Requirements
- Who it is for
- Beginner, with one intermediate calculation module. For electricians, electrical and maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors and safety officers. Basic electrical knowledge (voltage, current, a single-line diagram) is enough. This is awareness training: only your employer can designate you a qualified person.
- Software
- None required. A spreadsheet (Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc) helps with the incident energy scaling and the project. NFPA offers free read-only access to NFPA 70E after registering on its website. What to download, and how
- Hardware
- None. A multimeter or voltage tester, a lock and a tag make the practice tasks more real, but every task can be done on paper.

A shareable EDWartens certificate
Finish every module and pass the final assessment, and the optional EDWartens certificate is yours. It carries a unique verification code on a public page anyone can check, so it stands up when a recruiter looks it up. See it below.
The course itself stays free whether or not you ever buy one.
Stuck? Ask a practising engineer
A free course usually means a comment section and hope. This one does not. Every module has an Ask-your-trainer panel that reaches the same engineers who teach our paid programme: people who commission panels for a living, not moderators.

Common questions
Who is this electrical safety course for?
Electricians, electrical and maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors and safety officers who work on or near electrical equipment, anywhere in the world. Basic electrical knowledge is enough; one module uses simple arithmetic to scale arc-flash incident energy.
Is this NFPA 70E certification or qualified person training?
No. It is awareness training that covers the knowledge behind NFPA 70E, and it prepares you to take part in your employer's electrical safety programme. Only your employer can designate you a qualified person for particular equipment and tasks, and the EDWartens certificate is a certificate of completion, not NFPA 70E qualification.
Which standards and regulations does it cover?
The 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, which replaced the 2024 edition, IEEE 1584-2018 for arc flash calculations, India's CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2023 and IS 5216, with an overview of Gulf operator rules. The notes paraphrase the standards and do not reproduce their tables.
Do I need software or test equipment?
No. Every task can be done on paper or in a free spreadsheet. A free online IEEE 1584 calculator and NFPA's free read-only access to NFPA 70E are useful, and a multimeter, lock and tag make the practice more real if you have them.
How long does the Electrical Safety: Arc Flash, NFPA 70E and LOTO course take?
About 17.5 hours of video lessons, notes and practice, taken at your own pace; the videos alone are about 12 hours. The optional project, a lockout procedure, permit and arc-flash label for an MCC feeder, takes about 10 hours more.
Is the course free?
Yes. Every module, the notes, the project and the final assessment are free to learn. The only paid item is the certificate, if you want it.
What certificate does the Electrical Safety: Arc Flash, NFPA 70E and LOTO course give?
An EDWartens Certificate of Completion, issued when you pass the 15-question final assessment at 60 percent, with a number anyone can verify on our site. It is not an NFPA credential, a CEA certificate of competency or an Electrical Safety Officer appointment.
What jobs does it help with?
Electrician, electrical maintenance technician, maintenance engineer, HSE and electrical safety officer roles in factories, utilities, data centres, oil and gas and construction worldwide, where employers expect arc flash, LOTO and permit-to-work awareness. Go on to Testing and Maintenance of Transformers and Switchgear, or ETAP Power System Analysis for full arc flash studies.
