  • Any start date
  • 1 week to 24 months

Who it suits

Made for beginners.

You do not need to have designed anything. Basic electrical knowledge is enough, and you learn the documents first, then the sums in the order a designer does them.
  • Students of electrical engineering, energy and building services.
  • Anyone who wants to learn how a low-voltage system is drawn, sized and written up.
  • Read the notes on a phone, a tablet or a laptop.

What you will learn

Eight weeks, one picture each

Every week is open from day one. Each lesson takes a few minutes.
  1. A diagram from week 1, The design work and its documents

    Week 1

The design work and its documents

Name what an electrical designer produces, draw a simple single-line diagram and explain how drawings are revised and reviewed.

  2. A diagram from week 2, Loads and demand

    Week 2

    Loads and demand

Build a load schedule, apply a demand factor and work out the current a three-phase supply must carry.

  3. A diagram from week 3, Distribution and earthing systems

    Week 3

    Distribution and earthing systems

Describe how power is shared out in a building and name the earthing system of any supply.

  4. A diagram from week 4, Protective devices

    Week 4

    Protective devices

Pick the right MCB curve, explain RCD types in plain words and check that a breaker can stop the fault current.

  5. A diagram from week 5, Cable sizing

    Week 5

    Cable sizing

Size a cable from the design current: pick the device, apply the correction factors, read the table, then check voltage drop and short-circuit withstand.

  6. A diagram from week 6, Fault loop and disconnection

    Week 6

    Fault loop and disconnection

Work out Zs for a circuit, compare it with the maximum Zs for its device, and say what to change if it is too high.

  7. A diagram from week 7, Motors, power factor and quality

    Week 7

    Motors, power factor and quality

Lay out a motor feeder, compare starting methods, size a power factor capacitor bank and explain harmonics, a standby generator and a UPS.

  8. A diagram from week 8, The design package

    Week 8

    The design package

List what a complete electrical design package holds, from calculations and schedules to review, issue and as-built.

Practice, if you like

Work a design exercise, then check it yourself.

Practice is self-checking design exercises with your own numbers, checked when you submit. Each week also ends with a worked exercise. Skip them if you prefer.
  • Eight design exercises, from a maximum demand sum to a whole sub-board.
  • Free tools: QElectroTech, LibreCAD and a spreadsheet.
  • Your own numbers, checked when you submit, with a tick or a cross on each answer.
  • Best on a laptop or tablet. A phone works for reading.

Your pace

Choose a start date and a length.

We show your weekly plan. You can change it later.

Any length from 1 week to 24 months. Start on any date from today. Retry the weekly checks and the final quiz as often as you like.

Free learners keep full access. A verifiable certificate of completion is an optional paid document, issued by Wartens Ltd (UK). Anyone can check it with the QR code or number.

Questions

Quick answers

Is the Electrical Design internship really free?

Yes. Joining is free and so are all eight weeks, the weekly checks and the final quiz. You pay only if you choose an optional add-on.

How long can I take?

This internship runs for 1 week to 24 months. You pick a start date and can change your plan later. All eight weeks are open from day one, and a longer plan adds one more design exercise a week with fresh numbers.

What do I need?

A laptop or tablet to draw and to use a spreadsheet, and a free drawing tool such as QElectroTech or LibreCAD. A phone is fine for reading the notes and taking the checks.

What will I actually do?

You read short notes with diagrams, watch a few videos and take an easy check each week. Each week ends with a worked exercise, such as drawing a single-line diagram or building a load schedule, and you can try the self-checking design exercises, such as sizing a cable or a capacitor bank.

Are there exercises that check my answers?

Yes. The design exercises give you your own numbers, such as loads, lengths and a cable table. You work out the answers, enter them and press Check my answers. The server marks each answer and shows the working once you pass or after three tries. They are optional and not needed to finish.

Is there a certificate?

A certificate of completion is an optional paid document, issued by Wartens Ltd (UK). It has a QR code and a number, so anyone can verify it at edwartens.com/verification. The lessons stay free.

Is this a paid position?

No. It is training, not employment. Nothing is paid to you, and nothing here promises work with any company.

Do I need experience?

No. Basic electrical knowledge, such as volts, amps, power and a simple circuit, is enough. The first week shows what a designer produces and how a single-line diagram is drawn.

Your first lesson is free.
