Best Free AI Courses With Certificate for Engineers (2026)
Nine AI courses checked on the providers' own pages and ranked for engineers: what is free, what the certificate costs, and how much coding each one needs.

The best free AI course with certificate depends on what you need the certificate to prove. For a certificate that costs nothing, take Kaggle Learn, Elements of AI, Harvard's CS50 AI or the Hugging Face Agents Course. If your work is plant or sensor data, the EDWartens AI track is free to learn, with an optional paid certificate.

The short list

A course and a certificate are two different things. Almost every course here is free to learn. What differs is whether the proof of completion is free, paid, or not offered at all.
How we ranked them
We ranked for engineers, not for the general public. Four questions decided the order:
- Does it use data an engineer recognises? Sensor readings, energy logs and failure records teach different habits from photos of cats.
- Does it make you write code? Watching is not the same as training a model and getting the split wrong.
- Is the certificate free, and what does it claim? A completion record is useful. A certificate that says more than it is does harm.
- What does it assume? Some courses start at zero. Others expect a year of coding.
We run edwartens.com, so we have put our own track in the list and been plain about its paid certificate. Judge it by the same four questions.
1. EDWartens AI track: for plant and sensor data
The AI and machine learning courses on edwartens.com are built for automation, electrical and mechanical engineers. Python for AI and Engineering Data starts from zero with 4 to 20 mA readings and meter logs. Machine Learning with Python fits energy against production and classifies motor-current data. Predictive Maintenance with Machine Learning runs on vibration windows and NASA's run-to-failure engine data. Everything runs in Google Colab.
Every lesson, note and practice task is free. Video lessons are by independent YouTube creators, credited on each course page. Each course ends with one assessment: 15 questions, a 60% pass mark and three attempts. The certificate is optional and paid, from US$2.99 for a beginner course and a little more for intermediate courses. It is an EDWartens completion certificate, not a university or vendor qualification.
2. Kaggle Learn: the best free certificate for hands-on ML
Kaggle says its courses are provided at no cost and that you can earn certificates. The courses are short and practical: Intro to Machine Learning, Intermediate Machine Learning (missing values and data leakage), Feature Engineering, Time Series and Intro to Deep Learning are the ones an engineer should take. The data is not industrial, but the habits carry over.
3. CS50's Introduction to AI with Python
Harvard's CS50 AI covers search, knowledge, uncertainty, optimisation, learning, neural networks and language, taught in Python. The course is free. If you score at least 70% on each project, you are eligible for a free CS50 Certificate. The verified certificate through edX costs US$299. Harvard lists the course as seven weeks at 10 to 30 hours a week, so it is the most demanding course here.
4. fast.ai Practical Deep Learning
A free course of nine lessons, each around 90 minutes, for people who already code. fast.ai asks for about a year of coding experience, preferably in Python, and teaches the maths as it goes. The course page lists no certificate. Take it for the practice, not the paper.
5. Elements of AI
Built by MinnaLearn and the University of Helsinki, Elements of AI is a free introduction for non-experts, with no programming. The Introduction to AI certificate is free: you need to complete at least 90% of the exercises and get 50% right. The follow-on Building AI course has a paid certificate. It is the best free AI course for beginners who want the ideas before the code.
6. Hugging Face Agents Course
Free, and Hugging Face says its certification process is completely free. You can earn a fundamentals certificate after Unit 1, or a certificate of completion after further units and assignments. It expects Python and is aimed at building LLM agents rather than classic machine learning.
7. Microsoft Learn
Microsoft says its Learn training is free. Finishing a module earns a badge and a learning path earns a trophy, both on your Learn profile. The formal credential, Azure AI Fundamentals (exam AI-901), is a paid exam priced by the country where it is taken. Worth it if your employer runs on Azure.
8. DeepLearning.AI
The free plan gives access to all course videos. Hands-on labs and professional certificates sit in the paid Pro plan. The catalogue is strong on prompting, RAG and agents; just know that the certificate is not part of the free tier.
Is there a free AI course by Google?
Yes, but not the one most people find first. Google AI Essentials is paid: Google lists it at US$49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial on Coursera, with prices varying elsewhere. It takes under five hours and is aimed at using AI tools in daily work.
The free Google options are the Machine Learning Crash Course, with videos, interactive visualisations and exercises, and the Introduction to Generative AI course on Google Skills, a 45-minute introductory course that earns a badge. Kaggle's Learn page also carries a 5-Day Intensive Generative AI guide made with Google.
Free machine learning course with certificate: the best picks
If machine learning, rather than AI in general, is what you want on your CV, narrow the list:
- Kaggle Intro to Machine Learning, then Intermediate Machine Learning. Free, with free certificates, and the second course deals with data leakage, the mistake that ruins most first projects.
- [Machine Learning with Python](/free/machine-learning-with-python) on edwartens.com. Free in full, on energy and motor-current data, with grouped cross-validation and a motor-fault project. The certificate is optional and paid.
- CS50 AI. Its learning and neural network weeks sit inside a broader AI course, with a free CS50 Certificate if you pass every project at 70% or more.
- Google's Machine Learning Crash Course. A fast, visual introduction to regression and classification models from Google's developer site.
How much time each one takes
Plan the hours before you start, because an unfinished course proves nothing. The providers' own estimates:
- Elements of AI: about 4 to 8 hours per part, with a suggested six weeks overall.
- CS50 AI: seven weeks at 10 to 30 hours a week.
- fast.ai: nine lessons of about 90 minutes each, plus the practice.
- Hugging Face LLM Course: each chapter is designed for a week at 6 to 8 hours.
- Google AI Essentials: under five hours.
The EDWartens courses are self-paced with no deadline; the time you need depends on how many practice tasks you do properly.
Free AI courses for beginners: a route that works
If you are starting from nothing, do not collect certificates in parallel. Take one course at a time and finish it.

The order matters more than the provider. Python first, then machine learning with a proper train/test split, then one applied course on data like yours. Generative AI and RAG make far more sense once you have seen a model be confidently wrong on a test set. The EDWartens AI foundations path follows this order, and the Generative AI and LLM Foundations course is the concept course under the whole track.
What any free certificate is worth
A certificate is a record that you finished a course and passed its assessment. Say exactly that on your CV. Do not call a completion certificate a certification, and do not list a provider's name as if the provider certified you. The thing that gets you hired is the notebook behind it: a model on real data, with the split, the metric and the mistakes you fixed.

Questions
Which free AI course gives a certificate at no cost?
Kaggle Learn, the Introduction to AI course from Elements of AI, Harvard's CS50 AI (its free CS50 Certificate, not the edX one) and the Hugging Face Agents Course all issue a certificate without charging for it, on the terms each provider sets.
Is there a free AI course by Google?
Google AI Essentials is paid: in the US and Canada it costs US$49 a month on Coursera after a 7-day free trial. Google's Machine Learning Crash Course and the Introduction to Generative AI course on Google Skills are the free Google options.
Which free AI course is best for mechanical or electrical engineers?
One that uses the data you actually have. The EDWartens AI track teaches on meter logs, motor currents, vibration windows and NASA's engine data; Kaggle Learn is the best general-purpose free option with a free certificate.
Do I need to know Python before starting?
Not for Elements of AI or the first EDWartens course, which teaches Python from zero. CS50 AI and the Hugging Face courses expect Python, and fast.ai asks for about a year of coding experience.
Is a free AI certificate worth putting on a CV?
It shows you finished something, not that you can do it. Pair it with a notebook or project an interviewer can open, and name the certificate accurately: a completion certificate is not a vendor or university qualification.
