AI for Nurses and Healthcare Staff
Use AI tools safely in nursing work: how chatbots and clinical models work, ChatGPT for nurses, SBAR handovers and patient education, how information flows through care, custom assistants (ChatGPT projects and Gemini Gems), judging an AI alert, and the privacy and ethics every nurse now meets. Built on NBEMS and AIMSS lectures and lessons from nurse educators.

What you will learn
Explain in plain words how a large language model and a clinical prediction model work, and why each can be wrong; write de-identified prompts that give useful drafts; use AI to structure SBAR handovers and to write patient education at the right reading level; trace how information flows through patient care and where errors enter; build a simple custom assistant (a ChatGPT project or a Gemini Gem) from approved documents; work out what an AI alert's sensitivity, specificity and PPV mean on your ward; recognise bias; and work within data-protection law and hospital policy, with India's DPDP Act and ICMR guidance as the worked example.
- Explain how chatbots and clinical prediction models work, and why each can be wrong
- Write de-identified prompts that give useful drafts for nursing work
- Use AI to structure SBAR handovers while keeping the assessment your own
- Write patient education at the right reading level and confirm it with teach-back
- Trace how information flows through care and why bedside data quality matters
- Build and test a simple custom assistant (a ChatGPT project or a Gemini Gem) from approved documents
- Work out what an AI alert's sensitivity, specificity and PPV mean on your ward
- Work within data-protection law and hospital policy (worked example: India's DPDP Act and ICMR)

The course project 路 about 7 hours
Introducing an approved AI assistant on two medical wards: a pilot plan, a risk register, a safe-use procedure and a training record
Plan the safe introduction of a hospital-approved AI assistant for nursing documentation support and patient education on two medical wards, as the nurse leading the pilot: write the pilot plan, build the risk register, write the ward safe-use procedure, and record the training of every nurse before they use it. The sample pack shows each document for a district hospital. No real patient information is used anywhere.
Sample document pack, 4 documents, filled in for the scenario
- PlanPilot plan: AI assistant for discharge teaching and SBAR handover, wards 5A and 5B
- Risk registerRisk register: AI assistant pilot, wards 5A and 5B
- ProcedureSafe use of the AI assistant on wards 5A and 5B
- Training recordTraining record: AI assistant pilot, wards 5A and 5B
Read inside the course and download as a workbook. The project is optional practice, marked when you submit it; the certificate needs only the modules and the final assessment.

A shareable EDWartens certificate
Finish every module and pass the final assessment, and the optional EDWartens certificate is yours. It carries a unique verification code on a public page anyone can check, so it stands up when a recruiter looks it up. See it below.
The course itself stays free whether or not you ever buy one.
Stuck? Ask a practising engineer
A free course usually means a comment section and hope. This one does not. Every module has an Ask-your-trainer panel that reaches the same engineers who teach our paid programme: people who commission panels for a living, not moderators.

Common questions
Is this course clinical advice?
No. It teaches nurses and healthcare staff how to use AI tools safely in their own work: writing, documentation support, patient education, judging tools, and the privacy and ethics around them. It never tells you how to care for a patient, and nothing in it replaces your assessment, your policies or your professional judgement.
Who is the AI for Nurses and Healthcare Staff course for?
Registered nurses, nursing students, midwives and other ward and clinic staff. Doctors will find a separate course written for them.
Do I need coding or statistics?
No coding. The only statistics are sensitivity, specificity and predictive value, worked through with simple tables, and the arithmetic you already use for fluids and doses.
Can I use patient information in the exercises?
No. Every exercise uses invented or de-identified cases. The course teaches you never to put identifiable patient information into a public AI tool.
How long does the AI for Nurses and Healthcare Staff course take?
About nine and a half hours of lessons, notes and practice, which fits into two to four weeks around shifts. The optional project adds about seven hours.
What is the project in the AI for Nurses and Healthcare Staff course?
You plan the introduction of a hospital-approved AI assistant on two medical wards: a pilot plan, a risk register, a one-page safe-use procedure and a training record, with a filled-in sample pack to follow. Every patient in it is invented.
Is the AI for Nurses and Healthcare Staff course really free?
Yes. Every module, the notes, the project and the final assessment are free. The certificate is optional.
What certificate does the AI for Nurses and Healthcare Staff course give?
An EDWartens Certificate of Completion when you pass the final assessment, with a number anyone can verify on our site. It is not a nursing qualification, a registration requirement or continuing education credit, and we never describe it as one.
