What you will learn
Build a single-line diagram in ETAP with correctly modelled sources, transformers, cables, motors and loads, run and interpret load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, motor starting, transient stability, harmonic and ground-grid studies, size cables, transformers, capacitor banks and breakers from the results, and produce the reports a consultant or utility expects.
- Model a network in ETAP with nameplate data and run load flow
- Size cables and transformers and use tap changers
- Run IEC 60909 and ANSI short circuit and select breakers by device duty
- Set and coordinate overcurrent, differential, distance and motor protection in Star view
- Run arc flash, capacitor placement, motor starting, stability and harmonic studies
- Design a substation earthing grid to IEEE 80
For you
Taking ETAP Power System Analysis: Load Flow, Short Circuit, Protection, Arc Flash and Stability from the United States
- Free in the United States, as everywhere, and self-paced: lessons, notes and the final assessment are open at any hour, so your time zone and shift pattern do not matter.
- The optional certificate for learners in the United States is a one-off US$28.99. What you get for it
- Plants across the Americas most often run Allen-Bradley, Siemens and Inductive Automation; each has its own free course to take next.
- See automation and engineering jobs in the United States, and what the industry looks like in Houston, Detroit and Chicago.
- EDWartens also has a regional site for the United States, for classroom training and local support: edwartens.com/us.

Steel rolling mill on 11 kV: load flow, IEC 60909 short circuit, coordination and arc flash in ETAP
Model an 11 kV / 415 V TMT bar rolling mill in ETAP from its load list and equipment data, then run and report the four studies the mill's insurer and the utility asked for: load flow with bus voltages and losses, IEC 60909 short circuit with breaker duty, overcurrent coordination in Star view, and arc flash with incident energy and PPE. You deliver the ETAP project, your own load list and study basis, and the three study reports written to the sample's shape. The sample pack shows what a consultant hands the plant.
Sample document pack, 7 documents, filled in for the scenario

ETAP demos are free for 30 days and are for evaluation, learning and training only. The demo disables saving, limits printing and project size, and needs a corporate email address. Academic licences are sold to institutions, not given free to individuals, though students at an equipped institution pay nothing.
Steps
- 1.Open the ETAP demo page on etap.com.
- 2.Sign in or create a MyETAP account with your work email address.
- 3.Choose ETAP Power Simulator Demo Download.
- 4.Install the demo using ETAP's Demo Download Install Guide.
- 5.Open the sample projects to follow the course exercises.
- Because the demo cannot save, finish each exercise in one sitting or take screenshots of your results.

A shareable EDWartens certificate
Finish every module and pass the final assessment, and the optional EDWartens certificate is yours. It carries a unique verification code on a public page anyone can check, so it stands up when a recruiter looks it up. See it below.
The course itself stays free whether or not you ever buy one.
Stuck? Ask a practising engineer
A free course usually means a comment section and hope. This one does not. Every module has an Ask-your-trainer panel that reaches the same engineers who teach our paid programme: people who commission panels for a living, not moderators.

Common questions
Do I need an ETAP licence?
The demo and student editions cover most exercises; the course teaches the method so it transfers to any release or to a licensed seat at work.
Is this a power-systems theory course?
It is applied: every study is introduced with the theory needed to set it up and read the result, then run in ETAP.
Which industries use these studies?
Utilities, EPC contractors, industrial plants, data centres, oil and gas, renewables and every consultant who signs an electrical design.
Is the ETAP Power System Analysis course really free?
Yes. Every module, practice task and assessment. You create an account so your progress is saved and the assessments can be marked. The certificate is the only paid item, and only if you want it.
What certificate do I get, and is it a vendor qualification?
An EDWartens Certificate of Completion, issued when you pass the final assessment, with a verification code anyone can check. It is not a vendor credential and is never described as one.
Who made the video lessons in the ETAP Power System Analysis course?
The creators named in the Credits block at the foot of this page, on their own YouTube channels. EDWartens did not make the videos and the creators are not affiliated with EDWartens. What EDWartens wrote is the study plan, the notes, the practice tasks and the assessments.
How long does the ETAP Power System Analysis course take?
Plan on about 36 hours in all, including the video lessons, notes and practice tasks. It is self-paced, so you work through the fourteen modules at your own speed.
