ETAP Power System Analysis: Load Flow, Short Circuit, Protection, Arc Flash and Stability

The power-system studies every substation, plant and data-centre project needs, done in ETAP: single-line modelling, load flow and the per-unit system, cable and transformer sizing, short circuit by IEC 60909 and ANSI, relay setting and coordination with Star view, differential, distance, busbar and motor protection, arc flash, capacitor placement and power factor, motor starting and re-acceleration, transient stability, harmonics and filters, and earthing grid design.

  • Model a network in ETAP with nameplate data and run load flow
  • Size cables and transformers and use tap changers
  • Run IEC 60909 and ANSI short circuit and select breakers by device duty

IEC 61850 Substation Automation: GOOSE, SCL and IEC 60870-5 course cover
FreePower systemsAdvanced

IEC 61850 Substation Automation: GOOSE, SCL and IEC 60870-5

The utility side of SCADA, taught the way a substation automation engineer meets it: the IEC 61850 object model and its logical nodes, SCL files from ICD through SCD to CID, MMS reporting against GOOSE against Sampled Values, the engineering process a system configuration tool follows, testing from office simulation through factory and site acceptance to maintenance isolation, and the IEC 60870-5-101 and 104 link that carries the substation to the control centre.

  • Read any IEC 61850 object reference down to the data attribute and name the logical node behind it
  • Tell ICD, SSD, SCD and CID apart and say who produces each and when
  • Decide whether a signal belongs on MMS reporting, GOOSE or Sampled Values

Electrical Design Engineering: Loads, Cables, Breakers and Distribution

How a building or plant electrical system is designed on paper before anyone buys a cable: AC and DC fundamentals, star and delta, power factor, connected and demand load, diversity and demand factors, load estimation in Excel, reading drawings, power factor correction, panel boards and single-line diagrams, fuses and circuit breakers with trip curves, AF and AT and breaking capacity, cable construction, derating, sizing and voltage drop, conduits, fault level, earthing systems, UPS, transfer switches and lightning protection.

  • Revise AC, DC, star, delta, power and power factor
  • Estimate loads with demand, diversity and load factors and build a load schedule
  • Size capacitor banks and draw panel single-line diagrams

Data Centre Electrical and Critical Power course cover
FreePower systemsIntermediate

Data Centre Electrical and Critical Power

The electrical side of data centres, where the hiring is: the power path from grid to rack, tiers and redundancy, UPS and generators, the calculations, load flow, short-circuit and arc flash studies, PUE, monitoring, and what AI GPU racks change.

  • Trace data centre power from the utility to the rack
  • Compare N, N+1 and 2N redundancy and the Uptime Institute tiers
  • Calculate rack current, kVA and kW for single and three-phase feeds

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Design, Controls and Safety course cover
FreeRenewable energyIntermediate

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Design, Controls and Safety

How grid and commercial battery storage is designed, controlled and kept safe: cells to containers, LFP versus NMC, the power conversion system, EMS controls and grid services, sizing with solar, UL 9540A and NFPA 855, and the lessons of real BESS fires.

  • Tell MW from MWh and calculate duration, C-rate and round-trip losses
  • Name every part of a BESS from cell to 11 kV switchgear
  • Compare LFP and NMC chemistry for stationary storage

How to choose

Electrical Design Engineering covers the load, cable and breaker calculations every project starts with. ETAP Power System Analysis then models the whole network. IEC 61850 Substation Automation is for protection and substation engineers.

Questions

Do I need an ETAP licence?
The ETAP course uses ETAP; check with ETAP about access. The other courses do not need it.
Is IEC 61850 GOOSE covered?
Yes, along with SCL files and IEC 60870-5.
Who are these courses for?
Electrical engineers and graduates heading into utilities, EPC contractors or consultancies.
Is it free, and is there a certificate?
Every lesson, note and assessment is free. The EDWartens certificate is optional and paid, and you can finish without it.
