Data Centre Electrical and Critical Power

The electrical side of data centres, where the hiring is: the power path from grid to rack, tiers and redundancy, UPS and generators, the calculations, load flow, short-circuit and arc flash studies, PUE, monitoring, and what AI GPU racks change.

  • Trace data centre power from the utility to the rack
  • Compare N, N+1 and 2N redundancy and the Uptime Institute tiers
  • Calculate rack current, kVA and kW for single and three-phase feeds

Data Centre Cooling, BMS and DCIM

How data centres are cooled, controlled and run: hot and cold aisles, CRAC and CRAH units, chilled water plant, economisers, liquid and immersion cooling for AI racks, cooling redundancy and continuous cooling, BMS design, DCIM and operations, and PUE, WUE and CUE. Built on MEP Academy, TEQNYAT and Bryce Anderson lessons.

  • Trace the heat path and calculate the airflow and water flow a load needs
  • Compare CRAC and CRAH units, containment options and air- and water-cooled plant
  • Explain economisers and calculate chiller COP and kW per ton

Building Management Systems (BMS): HVAC Control, BACnet and Building Automation

How a modern building is controlled: BMS overview, components and architecture, sensors, actuators, controllers and field devices, BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks and KNX, HVAC applications for AHUs, chillers, cooling towers and boilers, pumps, tanks and hot water, lighting, access, CCTV, fire and energy integration, DDC panels, wiring and control logic, the front end with graphics, trends, schedules and alarms, testing, commissioning and handover, BACnet with Python, and case studies from hotels to data centres.

  • Explain BMS architecture, components and field devices
  • Design I/O point lists and choose protocols
  • Write sequences of operation for AHUs, chillers, boilers and pumps

How to choose

Electrical engineers should start with Data Centre Electrical and Critical Power; HVAC and BMS engineers with Data Centre Cooling, BMS and DCIM. Most facility roles need a working grasp of both.

Building Management Systems is the foundation course for the controls side if BACnet, Modbus and HVAC control loops are new to you.

Questions

Who are these courses for?
Electrical, HVAC, BMS and facilities engineers and technicians working in, or moving into, data centres.
Is cooling covered, or only power?
Both, in separate courses, with BMS and DCIM covered in the cooling course.
Do I need data centre experience?
No. A basic electrical or HVAC background is enough.
Is it free, and is there a certificate?
Every lesson, note and assessment is free. The EDWartens certificate is optional and paid, and you can finish without it.
