  • 1 week to 24 months

Who it suits

Made for beginners.

You do not need to have worked with instruments. Basic electrical knowledge is enough, and you start from what we measure, then move to signals, calibration and control loops.
  • Students of instrumentation, electrical, electronics, chemical and mechatronics.
  • Anyone who wants to learn how an instrument is chosen, wired, calibrated and checked in a control loop.
  • Read the notes on a phone, a tablet or a laptop.

What you will learn

Eight weeks, one picture each

Every week is open from day one. Each lesson takes a few minutes.
  1. A diagram from week 1, Measurement basics

    Week 1

    Measurement basics

Name what we measure, work out a span and read a simple P&ID.

  2. A diagram from week 2, Pressure and level

    Week 2

    Pressure and level

Tell gauge, absolute and differential pressure apart and choose a way to measure a tank.

  3. A diagram from week 3, Flow and temperature

    Week 3

    Flow and temperature

See how flow and temperature are measured and turn a reading into a percent.

  4. A diagram from week 4, Signals and loops

    Week 4

    Signals and loops

Explain a 4-20 mA loop, check its power and wire a tank loop in the Panel Lab.

  5. A diagram from week 5, Calibration

    Week 5

    Calibration

Run a five point check, work out the error and fill in a calibration record.

  6. A diagram from week 6, Control loops

    Week 6

    Control loops

Tell open from closed loop, see on/off control and what P, I and D do.

  7. A diagram from week 7, Final elements and tuning

    Week 7

    Final elements and tuning

See how a control valve is driven and tune a loop in small safe steps.

  8. A diagram from week 8, Commissioning instruments and handover

    Week 8

    Commissioning instruments and handover

Check an installation, run a loop check and prove the packing cell works.

Practice, if you like

Wire a loop in the Panel Lab. Build a control in LADX Mini.

The Panel Lab and LADX Mini are part of EDWartens Lab and run in your browser. You wire a tank loop and test a packing cell in the Panel Lab, and build one tank control in LADX Mini. Skip them if you prefer.
  • Two Panel Lab tasks, the tank loop and the packing cell, and one LADX Mini task, tank filling.
  • The Panel Lab runs a factory acceptance test (FAT) and shows PASS or FAIL for each check.
  • LADX Mini runs automatic tests on your ladder logic.
  • Best on a laptop or tablet. A phone works for reading and the checks.

Free learners keep full access. A verifiable certificate of completion is an optional paid document, issued by Wartens Ltd (UK). Anyone can check it with the QR code or number.

Questions

Quick answers

Is the Instrumentation and Process Control internship really free?

Yes. Joining is free and so are all eight weeks, the weekly checks and the final quiz. You pay only if you choose an optional add-on.

How long can I take?

Any length from 1 week to 24 months. You pick a start date and can change your plan later. All eight weeks are open from day one.

What do I need?

A laptop or tablet if you want to try the Panel Lab, LADX Mini and the spreadsheet exercises. A phone is fine for reading the notes and taking the checks.

What will I actually do?

You read short notes with diagrams, watch a few videos and take an easy check each week. Three weeks end with an optional task: wiring a tank loop and testing a packing cell in the Panel Lab, and building a tank control in LADX Mini. The other weeks have a written or spreadsheet exercise, such as a five point calibration check.

How are the practice tasks checked?

The Panel Lab runs a factory acceptance test (FAT) and shows PASS or FAIL for each test. LADX Mini runs automatic tests on your ladder logic. The tasks are optional practice and you can try them as often as you like.

Is there a certificate?

A certificate of completion is an optional paid document, issued by Wartens Ltd (UK). It has a QR code and a number, so anyone can verify it at edwartens.com/verification. The lessons stay free.

Is this a paid position?

No. It is training, not employment. Nothing is paid to you, and nothing here promises work with any company.

Do I need experience?

No. Basic electrical knowledge, such as volts, amps and a simple circuit, is enough. The first week explains what we measure and how to read a simple P&ID before anything else.

Your first lesson is free.
