Free Internship with Certificate: Real vs Scam

A free internship with a certificate is a placement or training programme you can join and finish without paying, which ends in a document that says what you completed. The phrase covers three very different things: short self-paced simulations, free supervised programmes, and paid certificate mills that call themselves free until the last step. Knowing which one you are looking at matters more than the certificate itself.

The search results for this phrase are mostly long lists of links, many unverified. This post does something different. It separates the tiers, gives a scam checklist built on government and university guidance, and explains how to make any certificate count. It also describes our own free internship in plain terms, so you can compare it to the rest.

The three tiers of a free internship with certificate

Forage says its job simulations are free, self-paced, end in a certificate, and take from 30 minutes to four or five hours, with 250 or more simulations from over 90 employers (page read 16 October 2026). They are useful for a first look at a company or a job type. They are not supervised, and nobody reads your work.

A free supervised programme asks more of you and gives more back: written tasks, someone or something that checks them, and a document that can be verified. The third tier, the certificate mill, takes your time and then charges for the paper.

None of these is an actual job. The University of Manchester's careers service says virtual work experience can run from hours to days and is useful for a CV and interviews (page read 16 October 2026), which is the right size of claim.

Scam checklist from government and university sources

The UK government's list of seven signs of job scams is short and still the best starting point: vague adverts, unclear contact details, pay that does not fit the work, an offer with no interview, requests for money for training, uniforms or checks, a company or email you cannot verify, and overseas domains that deserve extra research (published 26 January 2023, read 16 October 2026). Companies House is the place to check a UK company.

Ohio State's engineering career service adds generic sender addresses, early requests for personal or financial information, errors in the message, urgency, vague duties and unrealistic pay. Its advice is to never pay for training, software or materials, and to verify through the official company site and contact details you find yourself, then screenshot, stop replying and report (page read 16 October 2026).

If you are in India, the AICTE National Internship Portal states that registration, applying, shortlisting and the completion certificate are free, and that anyone asking money to apply through the portal is a scam. It gives internship@aicte-india.org as the place to report it (page read 16 October 2026). A news report dated 23 September 2026 says the portal's terms were updated on 15 September 2026 to bar organisations from charging students, and lists off-portal Google Forms, WhatsApp requests, payment links, link shorteners, personal UPI IDs and requests for Aadhaar or card photos as red flags (Career India, read 16 October 2026). That is a secondary news source, not AICTE itself.

The short video below walks through warning signs of a fake internship. It comes from Internshala, which runs an internship marketplace, so use it for the scam signs and make your own free-versus-paid decisions from the sources above.

Is an unpaid internship allowed?

A free-to-join programme and an unpaid job are not the same thing. In the UK, the government says the minimum wage depends on whether you are a 'worker', not on the label 'intern' or 'unpaid'. There are exemptions: required placements on a course of up to one year, school-age work experience, pure shadowing and genuine charity volunteering. You cannot sign away the right (page read 16 October 2026).

NACE, the US association, argues all internships should be paid, and says its 2022 survey data found paid interns averaged more job offers than unpaid ones (page read 16 October 2026). That is US survey data and says nothing about training programmes that are not jobs.

So the honest test is: is this employment? If you are doing a company's real work, you should ask about pay. If you are doing training, with exercises and checks, you should ask what you get for your time, and what, if anything, it costs.

Our free PLC Programming Internship, in plain terms

The free PLC Programming Internship is training, not employment, and it pays no stipend. It is run by Wartens Ltd, a UK company. It is free to join. There is no fee to join, ever, and all eight weeks, the weekly checks and the final quiz are free.

It is fully online, so it works from any country. You choose a length from 1 week to 24 months and start any date from today. The plan can be changed later; the plan builder shows how. The eight weeks use short lesson cards with diagrams and videos, from the PLC scan cycle and ladder start/stop with a seal-in, through timers and counters and Structured Text, to testing a machine before handover. The last week is a client brief with a mini project. Short weekly checks and a final quiz help you learn, and you can retry them as often as you like. Completion means every lesson, every weekly check and the final quiz.

Practice is optional. You can use free browser simulators or EDWartens Lab, which is free with a free EDWartens account and runs in a browser with nothing to install. Each lab job ends in a numbered factory acceptance test that runs by itself, so the pass is not a matter of opinion.

Factory acceptance test sheet marked accepted 5 of 5, listing each test with its criterion and a green PASS
A passed factory acceptance test sheet in the lab: the kind of result an intern can show.

What costs money is optional: an internship certificate, a joining letter, an evaluation report, a project report, a letter of appreciation (merit only), an extra project, or a 1:1 mentor call. Printed or framed copies are for India addresses only. Each document carries a QR code and a number anyone can check at /verification. You can look at sample documents before you decide. Learners aged 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian's consent, and under 13 cannot join.

How to make any certificate count

A certificate of completion shows you finished something. It does not show how well you did. To make it count, do three things. First, keep the output: a project, a test sheet, a short report. Second, say exactly what the programme was, in the same words it uses: 'free online training programme' is honest, 'worked at' is not. Third, make sure the document can be verified, and put the check link beside it on your CV.

Our own certificates of completion can be checked at /verification, and the guide on how to verify an engineering training certificate explains what to look for on anyone's. For the wider question of whether free certificates help, read are free PLC certificates worth it and what free courses with certificates really cost. To start learning first, the free Siemens TIA Portal course is a good place.

EvidenceWhat to keepHow someone checks it
The certificateA copy and the number on itAn online verification page
The workFiles, screenshots, a test sheetThey ask you to explain it
The datesThe start and end in writingThe organisation confirms
The programmeIts description and the tasksThey read it themselves

Employers will not check everything, but a reader who can check one thing in a minute is more likely to trust the rest. Make that easy for them. Put the verification link, not just the title, on your CV, and keep a short note of what each task asked you to do. If the programme closes or changes its pages, your own copy is the record.

A quick way to decide

  • If it asks for money before you start, walk away.
  • If nobody reads your work, treat it as a simulation and keep it short.
  • If tasks, dates and a verification link are written down, it is worth a trial.
  • If it teaches a skill you can show in an interview, finish it, and keep the output.

Free is a fine price for learning. It is a poor reason to skip the checks above.

Questions

Is a free internship with a certificate really free?

Some are, and some are not. A genuine one lets you join and finish without paying. Watch for fees that appear later for the certificate, a 'kit', 'processing' or a 'priority place'. Ask in writing what, if anything, costs money before you start.

Is a free internship certificate valid?

A certificate is valid in the sense that it is honest about what you did, if someone can verify it. It is not a licence or a vendor credential. Employers care more about the work behind it, so keep samples, a short write-up and the verification link.

How can I tell a free internship is not a scam?

Check that the organisation exists, that contact comes from a work email, that tasks and dates are written down, and that nobody asks for money or ID photos. UK government guidance lists the same signs: vague adverts, requests for upfront money, and offers with no interview.

Does an unpaid internship break the law?

In the UK, entitlement to the minimum wage depends on whether you are a worker, not on the label 'intern' or 'unpaid', and there are exemptions such as required course placements. A training programme that is not employment is different from a job. Check the rules for your country.

Does our free internship pay a stipend?

No. The free PLC Programming Internship is training, not employment, and pays no stipend. It is free to join, with no fee ever. Optional documents such as a certificate are paid add-ons, each carrying a QR code and number that anyone can check at /verification.

Can I do a free online internship while studying?

Yes, if the programme is flexible. The free PLC Programming Internship is fully online, lets you pick any length from 1 week to 24 months and start from today, and lets you change the plan later, so it can sit alongside classes.
