An internship for first year students is rarely a posted job, so build your own: ask your college what it counts, learn one skill with a free course, join a free online internship for structure, finish one small project and then email small firms with the link. This post explains what is realistic and what to avoid.

Can first year students get an internship?
Yes, but not usually the way second- and third-year students do. Imperial College London says internships with multinational organisations are often reserved for penultimate-year students and finalists. Instead, it suggests first-years look at spring insight experiences, which many large employers offer to first-year students as short taster programmes, and check each company's eligibility rules, because some companies do open internships to first-years (page read 17 October 2026).
The same page recommends approaching small and medium-sized companies, noting that many do not advertise placements but may take students who contact them directly, and that these employers often open applications later and have fewer eligibility limits (page read 17 October 2026). TARGETjobs adds that first year is a time to test the water and build skills, and that part-time jobs, volunteering and extracurricular activity also count as experience (UK advice, so adjust for your own country).
The practical conclusion: the aim in first year is not a famous name. It is one skill, one finished project and one honest account of both.
What does your college expect in first year?
Often, less than you think, and sometimes something different. AICTE's internship policy, which technical colleges in India draw on, suggests that in the summer after the second semester, students take part in inter or intra institutional activities such as training with higher institutions, soft skill training, contributing to an innovation or incubation cell, or learning in a departmental or tinkering lab. Industrial internships come later, after the fourth semester (PDF read 17 October 2026).
That means a first-year internship is usually extra, not required. It is also a chance to be more strategic: whatever you do now should make your second-year applications stronger. Ask your training and placement cell what is counted, what evidence it wants and whether an online, self-paced programme is accepted.

What can you do in first year that employers value?
Choose one skill and prove it. Do not collect a dozen certificates. Here are examples by branch.
| Branch | A good first-year skill | Proof to build |
|---|---|---|
| EEE | Reading circuits; basic PLC ladder | A motor start/stop with a test |
| Mechanical, mechatronics | Sensors and a simple PLC job | A conveyor or pump program that runs |
| ECE and EIE | Signals and basic instrumentation | A written loop check |
| CS and IT | Python and data handling | A notebook that cleans and charts data |
| Commerce, MBA | Prompting and spreadsheets | A prompt pack for one task |
For hands-on starts, the OpenPLC course runs on inexpensive hardware you may already have, the CODESYS course covers the standard languages, and Python for AI and engineering data suits IT students. Our post on how to learn PLC programming for free is a step-by-step path for engineers.
Open simulations help too. Forage says its job simulations are free, open and self-paced, and that you earn a certificate after completing the tasks (page read 17 October 2026). They are short practice sessions, not internships, but they give a first year something to put on a CV.
Is there a free online internship for first year students?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to start because it has no application and no deadline. EDWartens runs 16 free internships, all online: six in engineering and automation, and ten in AI. They are free to join, you start on any date, and you choose a length from 1 week to 24 months for engineering or 1 to 8 weeks for AI. They are training, not employment, and pay no stipend.
Every week is open from day one, the lessons are short notes, diagrams and a few videos, and the weekly checks and final quiz can be retried as often as you like. Practice is optional and uses free tools or the browser-based EDWartens Lab. The certificate and other documents are optional paid add-ons, priced in your currency before you pay, and verifiable at /verification. Learners aged 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian's consent, and under 13 cannot join.
For a first year, the sensible picks are the PLC Programming Internship or the AI and Machine Learning Internship, because both start from the basics. Compare all of them on the free internships page, the engineering page and the AI page, then set your dates in the planner.
What does a first-year calendar look like?
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| First semester | Settle in, ask your cell what it counts, pick one skill |
| Second semester | Finish one free course and one small project |
| Break after semester two | A 4 week online internship or an insight event |
| Third semester | Put the project on your CV and email small firms |
| Next break | Apply for a posted internship with your evidence |
The calendar is deliberately light. First year has exams, new subjects and a new city for many students, and burning out in October helps nobody. One finished skill, one finished project and one written account are enough to start second year ahead of most of your batch.
How do you ask your college and small firms?
Keep both messages short and specific. To your college: 'I plan to complete a self-paced online internship in [track] in the break after semester two. Will the cell accept a provider's certificate and my report? What format do you need?' Attach the sample documents page so they can see what would be issued, and the colleges page so they can read how it works. Credit is your university's decision.
To a small firm, write four sentences: who you are, what you built, what you would like to learn, and the link. Offer a specific, short task, such as documenting a machine's I/O list, and never ask for money or offer any. If a firm or website asks you to pay to be considered, stop. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that honest employers do not charge fees for a job and that 'training' or certification fees are a common scam (page read 17 October 2026).
How do you choose your first skill?
Ask three questions. What do I want to be doing in my third year? Which skill do the second- and third-year students around me wish they had started earlier? And what can I finish in one semester alongside my classes? For many engineers the answer is one of three: basic PLC ladder logic, Python for data, or circuit and panel reading. Pick one, give it a fixed weekly slot, and stop adding others until it is done.
A small, finished skill beats a broad, unfinished one. It also makes your second-year application specific: 'I wrote and tested a PLC program for a tank-filling job' is far stronger than 'I am interested in automation'.
What should you not worry about in first year?
You do not need a famous employer, a long CV or a stipend yet. You do not need to know your final specialisation. Many students change direction between first and third year, and a skill learned seriously is rarely wasted, because the habits of finishing, testing and writing carry over to any branch. Worry less about the label on the internship and more about whether you can explain, in two minutes, what you built and what went wrong.
What to avoid in first year
- Paying a fee to join, or paying 'registration' to an agent.
- Collecting many certificates with no project behind them.
- Starting several programmes at once and finishing none.
- Believing a certificate from a provider carries an approval it cannot show.
The three rules for first year are the same as for any year: finish what you start, keep evidence, and ask your college early. For the next steps, read summer internship 2027 for the timeline, and internship report format so you collect the right evidence from day one.

Questions
Can first year students do an internship?
Yes, though fewer large employers take them. Many first years do short insight events, work with small firms or labs, or complete a free online internship. AICTE's credit table also suggests inter or intra institutional activities after the second semester, so ask your college.
What is the best internship for a first year engineering student?
One that teaches a core skill and ends in something you can show. For EEE and mechanical branches that is often a PLC or panel project, for IT students Python and a small machine learning project. Choose what you want to be doing in your third year.
Are there free internships for freshers online?
Yes. EDWartens internships are free to join, fully online, need no application or interview and start on any date. They are training, not employment, with no stipend. Learners aged 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian's consent, and under 13 cannot join.
Will my college count an online internship in first year?
That is your college's decision. Credit and format rules differ, and many colleges do not expect an internship until a later semester. Ask what they accept, and show them the sample documents and the report you plan to write.
Do I need coding skills for a first-year internship?
Not always. Many first-year routes teach the basics from the start. For an AI or machine learning internship, basic Python helps, and a free Python course can be done in parallel. For PLC and panel work, you start with ladder logic and wiring ideas, not code.
Should I pay for a first-year internship?
Do not pay a fee to be accepted. Consumer guidance warns against paying for training or certifications to get work. A free-to-join programme with optional paid documents lets you decide later, after you have seen what you get.
