Internship Report Format: Sections and a Checklist

A standard internship report format has a title page, a certificate or letter, acknowledgements, contents, an introduction with your objectives, a description of the organisation or programme, the work you did, results and learning, a conclusion and appendices. Your college's own template always wins, so ask for it first. This post explains each part.

What is the right internship report format for a college?

There is no single national template, so the format is whatever your department publishes. What does not change much is the skeleton. AICTE's internship policy asks students to keep a daily diary and prepare a comprehensive report of what they observed and learnt, signed by the internship supervisor, the training and placement officer and the faculty mentor, and it lists how the report is judged: originality, adequate and purposeful write-up, organisation and style, variety and relevance of learning, and links between practice and the theory taught in the course (PDF read 17 October 2026).

Other universities ask for similar sections. The University of Regina's computer science co-op programme lists a letter of submittal, title page, table of contents, executive summary, introduction, main body, analysis, conclusions, optional recommendations, appendices and a bibliography. It also tells students not to write a day-by-day account of the job (page read 17 October 2026). That is worth remembering: a report analyses what you learned, it does not just list what you did.

What goes in each section?

SectionWhat to writeLength
Title pageName, roll number, programme, provider, datesOne page
Certificate or letterThe provider's document, with its number and verification linkOne page
AcknowledgementsShort thanks to your supervisor, mentor and collegeA paragraph
ContentsHeadings with page numbersOne page
IntroductionWhat the internship is, why you chose it, three objectivesHalf a page
The organisation or programmeWho runs it, what it teaches, how it is organisedOne page
Work doneThe tasks, tools and results, week by week, with evidenceThe longest part
Results and learningWhat worked, what failed, what you would changeOne to two pages
ConclusionHow the objectives were met, in a few sentencesHalf a page
AppendicesLogs, code, screenshots, test sheetsAs needed

Write the introduction and summary last. By then you know what the report actually says. The order that works best is in the figure below.

Why does a daily log matter?

Because memory fades quickly and supervisors ask for evidence. AICTE's policy says the main purpose of the diary is to build the habit of documenting and searching for details, and that the daily diary helps greatly in writing the report because much of the information is already in it (PDF read 17 October 2026). It lists how a diary is judged: regularity, adequacy and quality of the information, drawings, sketches and data, the thought process shown, and organisation.

You do not need anything fancy. Two lines a day will do: what you worked on, what went wrong, what you learned. Attach a screenshot or a photo of the day's result. If you are doing a self-paced online internship, log each lesson, each weekly check and each project step in the same way.

What does the report look like for a PLC internship?

A PLC internship report shows that you can take a machine description to a tested program. A sensible outline follows. Replace the machine with whichever job you did.

  • Introduction. Why PLC programming, and three objectives, such as writing a start/stop circuit with a seal-in, using timers and counters, and passing a machine test.
  • The programme. For the PLC Programming Internship: eight weeks of short lessons, weekly checks, a final quiz and optional practice in free simulators or EDWartens Lab.
  • Work done. The machine brief, the I/O list, your ladder or Structured Text, and a screenshot of it running.
  • Testing. The numbered test sheet you passed, and one failure you fixed, with before and after.
  • Learning. What the scan cycle taught you about why an output flickered.
  • Appendix. The program listing and the test report.

A screenshot like this, with a sentence on what it proves, is the evidence a PLC report needs.

For the theory behind that outline, the post on the PLC scan cycle explains why timing bugs happen, and how to learn PLC programming for free shows the practice route. For wiring and panel internships, replace the program listing with the schematic, the wiring schedule and the test record.

What does the report look like for an AI internship?

An AI internship report shows that you can ask a question, use data, build something and judge it honestly. Use this outline.

  • Introduction. The question you tackled and three objectives, for example cleaning a dataset, training a baseline and a better model, and reporting where it fails.
  • The programme. For example the AI and Machine Learning Internship: eight short weeks, a worked exercise each week in free notebooks, weekly checks and a final quiz.
  • Work done. The data, how you cleaned it, the models you tried and the code, in a notebook linked from the report.
  • Results. One table of scores, one chart, and a paragraph on errors.
  • Limits and ethics. Data you were allowed to use, bias you noticed and what the model must not be used for.
  • Appendix. The notebook, a requirements list and your weekly log.

Our post on AI internships for students lists what a good student project shows, and the Python for AI and engineering data course and machine learning with Python give you the skills to build it.

What evidence should you attach?

Evidence turns claims into facts. Attach these where they apply.

EvidenceWhy a reader wants it
Screenshots with captionsThey show the result and what it proves
Test sheets or scoresThey show the work was judged, not just done
Code or program listingsThey show how you did it
Weekly log pagesThey show regular work
The provider's documentIt shows who confirms the internship
A verification linkIt lets the reader check the document themselves

NACE, the US association for employers and career services, says a genuine internship has learning objectives and qualified supervision with feedback (page read 17 October 2026). Reflect that in your report by stating your objectives in the introduction, then showing in the conclusion how each was met or not, and by quoting any feedback you received.

What mistakes make a report weak?

  • A diary pasted in as the report. The daily log is raw material. The report analyses it.
  • No evidence. A claim with no screenshot, score or listing is only an opinion.
  • Copying a classmate's structure and text. Supervisors and vivas find this quickly, and originality is one of AICTE's listed criteria.
  • Skipping the failures. The part where something went wrong and you fixed it is usually the best part of the report.
  • Late signatures. Ask your supervisor and mentor for dates in advance, because signatures take longer than writing.

How long should each part of the report take?

Plan the writing as you plan the work. A rough split that suits most students: a quarter of your time on collecting evidence while you work, half on the work-done and results sections, and a quarter on the introduction, conclusion and checks. Leave a full day at the end for signatures and printing. If your report is also marked in a viva, rehearse a two-minute summary of each section, because examiners ask about the evidence, not the headings.

How does an optional EDWartens report fit in?

If you do an EDWartens internship, you write your college report from your own lessons, checks and project at no cost. The internship is free for the first 4 weeks, is training and not employment, and pays no stipend. The first 4 weeks earn a free certificate of completion. Optional paid documents exist for those who want them: the graded Internship Certificate, letters and reports. Each carries a QR code and a number anyone can check at /verification, and each is priced in your currency before you pay. See them first on the sample documents page.

If your college has specific signatures it needs, show it the colleges page early, so the format is agreed before you start. The options themselves are on the engineering internships and AI internships pages, and credit for any of them is your university's decision. The related post on internship certificate format shows what the provider's document should contain, and internship certificate verification shows how a reader checks it.

Finish by reading the report aloud once. If a sentence needs the writer in the room to make sense, add the missing detail. A clear, honest report with real evidence will serve you in a viva, in an interview and on your CV.

Questions

What is the standard internship report format?

A title page, a certificate or letter from the provider, acknowledgements, contents, an introduction with objectives, a section on the organisation, the work you did, results and learning, a conclusion, and appendices. Your college's own format always takes priority, so ask for it first.

How long should an internship report be?

It depends on your college. The University of Regina's computer science co-op guide, for example, asks for a main body of 5 to 7 pages, and other universities set different limits. Check your college's rules and write to those, not to a number you found online.

Do I need a daily log for the report?

Often yes. AICTE's internship policy describes a daily diary signed by the supervisor and says it helps greatly in writing the report. Even if your college does not ask for one, a short daily or weekly log makes the report much easier and more honest.

Can I write an internship report for an online internship?

Yes. Replace the workplace section with a description of the programme, and replace workplace photos with screenshots, test sheets or notebook output. Ask your college whether a self-paced online internship is accepted and what signatures it needs.

What should I include for a PLC internship report?

The machine you programmed, the I/O list, your ladder or Structured Text, a screenshot of it running, the test sheet you passed and what went wrong on the way. Explain each result in one sentence so a reader can follow it without you.

Does EDWartens provide a report for my internship?

EDWartens offers reports as optional paid documents, each verifiable at edwartens.com/verification and priced in your currency before you pay. You can write your own college report from your lessons, checks and project at no cost. Credit stays your university's decision.
