An AICTE internship is an internship carried out under the All India Council for Technical Education's policy, or found through its National Internship Portal. AICTE's policy suggests credits, weeks and hours for degree and diploma students, but your university applies its own rules. Always check the current wording on AICTE's pages and your college's notice. EDWartens claims no AICTE approval.

What do the AICTE internship rules say?
The AICTE document called Internship Policy: Guidelines and Procedures sets out a framework. It says a minimum of 14 to 20 credits of internship, entrepreneurial activity, project work, seminar and inter or intra institutional training may be counted toward a B.Tech degree, and 10 to 14 credits toward a three-year diploma. It defines one credit as a minimum of 40 to 45 hours of work, which it says gives about 600 to 700 hours for a B.Tech degree and 450 to 500 hours for a diploma (PDF read 17 October 2026).
It also says internships may be full-time in the summer vacation and part-time during the academic session, and that institutes have the flexibility to schedule internships according to the opportunities available. The table above reproduces its suggested schedule for degree students: activities after the second semester, industry, government, NGO or MSME internships after the fourth and sixth, and project work and a seminar in the eighth.
A caution about the date. AICTE has issued and revised internship material more than once, and universities adopt their own credit rules, so the numbers above are what the document we read says, not necessarily what your university requires today. Treat the policy as background and your college's regulation as the rule.
| Item | What the AICTE policy document says | Who decides in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Credits | 14 to 20 for B.Tech, 10 to 14 for diploma may count | Your university |
| Hours per credit | 40 to 45 | Your university |
| Timing | Summer vacations and during the session | Your college |
| Evidence | Daily diary, final report, supervisor evaluation | Your college |
| Paid or unpaid | Compensated, non-compensated or sometimes paid | The provider |
How does the UGC framework relate?
AICTE covers technical education. The University Grants Commission publishes separate internship guidance for undergraduate programmes. ThePrint reported on 11 May 2022 that students who exit with a certificate after the first year or a diploma after the second must complete an 8 to 10 week internship carrying 10 credits, taken after the second or fourth semester, and that four-year programmes also require at least 8 to 10 weeks (page read 17 October 2026). The article does not describe who issues the internship certificate, so ask your college.
UGC has revised its undergraduate internship guidance since, and universities summarise it differently. Because a news report is not the notification, check the UGC document your university has adopted. The honest summary is that the exact credits and weeks depend on your degree, your university and the year you joined.
What does the AICTE National Internship Portal offer?
The portal is a separate thing from the policy. Its own page says registration, applications, shortlisting and the completion certificate cost a student nothing, that one profile works for every posting, that stipends are stated upfront and paid to the student's bank account, and that completing an internship earns a certificate with a QR code that anyone can scan to verify. It also says credits go into the student's Academic Bank of Credits account (page read 17 October 2026).
The page includes a firm warning: any website, agent or placement consultant that asks you to pay to apply through the portal is a scam, and it gives an email address for reporting. Take that seriously, and apply the same rule to any internship offer that claims a link to AICTE. If a person asks for money to put you on the portal, walk away.

Where do online internships fit?
This is the question the policy answers least. The AICTE document describes placements with industry, a student diary signed by a supervisor, visits by faculty mentors and evaluation by industry. It mentions that institutions may devise online systems for arranging and managing internships, which is about administration, not remote work. On the day we read the portal, its FAQ listed a question on whether remote work is possible but the page did not answer it, and gave a helpline and an email address for such questions (pages read 17 October 2026).
So the answer is: it depends on your college. Some accept online internships with a certificate and a report; some want a signed letter from an organisation and a supervisor. Ask in writing, and keep the reply. The post on remote internships for engineering students and the guide to virtual internships explain how those formats usually work.
How does an EDWartens internship relate to AICTE?
It does not carry AICTE approval, and we make no such claim. EDWartens runs 16 free internships, all online, in two groups: six in engineering and automation, and ten in AI. They are free to join with no fee, there is no application or interview, you start on any date, and they are training, not employment, with no stipend. Engineering internships run from 1 week to 24 months and AI internships from 1 to 8 weeks. Issuer: Wartens Ltd (UK), delivered through EDWartens.
What they can offer is evidence your college may find useful: short lessons, weekly checks and a final quiz, a project, and optional documents. The certificate, letters and reports are optional paid add-ons priced in your currency before you pay, each with a QR code and number that anyone can check at /verification. Look at the sample documents and the colleges page and take them to your training cell. Whether any credit is awarded is your university's decision.
If you want to see the options, start with free internships, engineering internships or AI internships, and plan dates in the planner.
What evidence do AICTE-style internships collect?
The policy document includes ready-made formats that show what colleges tend to keep: the student's internship application, a request letter from the institute to the provider, an internship synopsis agreed with a faculty mentor and an industrial supervisor, a relieving letter, a daily diary, a supervisor's evaluation of the intern, the student's own evaluation and an attendance sheet (PDF read 17 October 2026). Not every college uses all of them, but the list tells you what to gather as you go.
Portal, college or online programme: which route?
| Route | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| AICTE National Internship Portal | Postings with stated stipends and a QR certificate | Never pay to apply; places are limited |
| Your college's training cell | Credit and signatures that match its rules | Early deadlines |
| A self-paced online programme | Starting any day, a project and verifiable documents | Your college must agree it counts |
Most students do best by using two routes: one for a placement and one for skills. The first gives you the name and the supervisor, the second gives you structure and a finished project while you wait.
How to use AICTE's framework in your own plan
- Find your college's current internship notice and the number of weeks and credits it expects.
- Use the portal and your cell for employer placements, and never pay to apply.
- Keep a daily diary; the policy describes one signed by the supervisor and says it helps with the final report.
- Write the report in your college's format; see internship report format.
- Add a free online programme for skills and a verifiable record, and check how your college treats it.
For skills to build while you wait for a placement, the free Siemens TIA Portal course and OpenPLC course suit PLC students, and machine learning with Python suits AI students. Pair them with the timelines in summer internship 2027 and winter internship 2026, and you will arrive at your college's cell with a clear question and something to show.

Questions
What are the AICTE internship rules?
AICTE's internship policy suggests that 14 to 20 credits of internship and related activity may count toward a B.Tech degree, and 10 to 14 credits toward a three-year diploma, with one credit equal to 40 to 45 hours. Colleges and universities apply their own rules, so read your college's current notice.
Is the AICTE internship portal free?
The portal's own page says registration, applications, shortlisting and the completion certificate cost students nothing, and that anyone asking you to pay to apply through it is a scam. Read the portal's current page before you sign up, since terms can change.
Is EDWartens an AICTE-approved internship?
No. EDWartens does not claim AICTE, UGC or any other approval. Its internships are free to join, fully online training, not employment, with no stipend. Credit decisions rest with your university, so ask your college whether it accepts a self-paced online programme.
Can I do an AICTE internship online?
Some colleges accept online internships and some do not. The policy document itself talks about industry placements, diaries and supervisor evaluation and does not say much about remote work. Ask your training and placement cell in writing what it accepts and in what form.
How many hours is an AICTE internship?
AICTE's policy gives one credit as 40 to 45 hours and suggests about 600 to 700 hours of internship and related activity across a B.Tech degree. Individual internships are shorter, as the schedule of weeks after each semester shows. Your university's regulations decide your actual requirement.
What does an AICTE internship report need?
AICTE's policy describes a daily diary and a final report signed by the supervisor, the training and placement officer and the faculty mentor, judged on originality, organisation and relevance. Your college may add its own format, so use the internship report post for a template.
