An internship for electrical engineering students is a short placement, usually one to six months, where you work on electrical design, panels, PLC and control systems, maintenance or testing under supervision. Genuine routes include your college placement cell, government portals such as AICTE in India, university careers services, and companies you contact directly. This post maps those routes, shows how to avoid fake offers, and gives you a four-week plan for building evidence if a placement does not arrive.
Electrical engineering is called EEE in many Indian colleges, and the search results for the topic are mostly scattered notices, old PDFs and listing sites. We have tried to give one clear picture, sourced to pages we opened on 16 October 2026.
Genuine routes to an internship for electrical engineering students
In India, the AICTE National Internship Portal, run under the Ministry of Education, says registration, applying, shortlisting and the completion certificate are free. It says stipends are shown in the posting and paid monthly, and that durations run from 1 to 4 weeks, 1 to 6 months, or 6 months and more. Certificates carry a QR code and can count towards the Academic Bank of Credits. It also states that anyone asking money to apply through the portal is a scam, and gives internship@aicte-india.org for reports (page read 16 October 2026).
A news report of 15 September 2026 describes two live portal listings: an onsite three-month electrical engineer internship in Gurugram covering preventive maintenance and troubleshooting, and a six-month mechanical internship with a monthly stipend (read 16 October 2026). Listings change, so check the portal itself. The point is what a real electrical listing looks like: named duties, a place and a duration, and no fee.

| Route | Where it works best | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| College placement cell | Final-year and summer placements | Whether the company is named |
| Government portal | India, any year | The listing is on the portal itself |
| University careers service | UK and US | Whether the employer is verified |
| Direct to a company | Any country | The company's official contact details |
| Free online programme | Gaps between placements | That it is training, not a job |
In the UK and US, your university careers office knows the employers who take students. US employers often open summer internships in the autumn before, so start looking early, and open each company's own careers page before you rely on a third-party list.
Avoid fake offers
A news report of 23 September 2026 says AICTE updated the portal's terms on 15 September 2026 to bar organisations from charging students, and lists off-portal Google Forms, WhatsApp requests, payment links, link shorteners, personal UPI IDs and requests for Aadhaar or card photos as red flags. It says that if you have paid, you should call 1930 within 24 hours and file a report at cybercrime.gov.in (Career India, read 16 October 2026). It is a secondary news source, so check current steps with the portal.
The UK government's seven signs of job scams are worth knowing in any country: vague adverts, unclear contact details, pay that does not fit, an offer with no interview, requests for money for training, uniforms or checks, a company or email you cannot verify, and overseas domains that need extra research (read 16 October 2026).
A college charging its own course fee for an internship run as part of a course is a separate case from a company charging you to apply. Ask the college in writing what the fee covers. A company or a portal should not charge you to be considered.
What an electrical intern actually does
Duties vary, but a placement usually mixes some of these: reading schematics and drawings, helping build or test control panels, assisting with PLC programming, preventive maintenance, writing test sheets and reports, and following safe isolation procedures. The last matters more than it sounds. HSE says live work is never absolutely safe and is justified only where dead working is unreasonable, that isolation should be secure and locked, and that you prove dead with suitable test equipment before touching exposed conductors (page read 16 October 2026). Expect any good supervisor to teach that before anything else, and never work on live equipment unless a competent person tells you to and your site rules allow it.
The video below shows how to read a PLC wiring diagram in simple steps, a skill that appears in most electrical internship tasks. It comes from RealPars, which also sells training.
Skills that get an EEE student shortlisted
Employers rarely ask for a long list. They look for four things you can show:
- Reading drawings. Trace a motor starter on a schematic and say where it could fail.
- Basic PLC logic. A start/stop with a seal-in, a timer and a counter. PLC interview questions and answers lists what gets asked.
- Safety habits. Isolation, proving dead and lockout. The free electrical safety course and the post on NFPA 70E training requirements cover the basics.
- One finished project. Brief, logic, test result. See engineering portfolio from course projects.
Electrical panel design training explains the panel side in more detail, and electrical QA and QC engineer shows another route that values test sheets and documentation.
What to build while you apply
Placements take time. While you wait, build evidence. The plan below takes four weeks at a pace that fits alongside classes.

EDWartens Lab is free with a free EDWartens account and runs in a browser, with nothing to install. The PLC lab has eight machines, including a tank filling pump, which you can program in ladder, Structured Text or SFC. The machine responds in 2D and in 3D, and every job ends in a numbered factory acceptance test that runs automatically.

The Panel Lab has ten levels at 415 V 50 Hz on IEC practice: transfer-pump DOL starter with a PLC, outfeed conveyor fault-finding, star-delta fan, forward/reverse conveyor and more. You lock out, prove dead with a two-pole tester and a proving unit, wire terminal to terminal from the schematic, restore power, commission and pass the test.

Be honest about what it is. It is a simulation. It cannot teach crimp quality, cable routing, real noise or real hazards, and the companies in its work orders are fictional. Use it to build logic and procedure, then get site time through a placement. Public project pages are at /project-sim.
| Skill | A free way to practise | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Reading a schematic | Panel Lab levels | A marked-up drawing |
| PLC logic | PLC lab machines | A passed test sheet |
| Safe isolation | The free safety course | Your own checklist |
| Fault-finding | The troubleshooting course | A short fault report |
A free online internship in PLC programming
The free PLC Programming Internship can sit beside your degree. It is free to join, with no fee to join, ever, and fully online, so it works from any country. You choose a length from 1 week to 24 months, start from today, and can change the plan later. It is training, not employment, and it pays no stipend. It is issued by Wartens Ltd, a UK company.
It has eight weeks of short lesson cards with diagrams and videos: the PLC scan cycle, ladder start/stop with a seal-in, timers and counters, Structured Text, and testing a machine before handover, ending with a client brief and a mini project. Weekly checks and a final quiz help you learn and can be retried as often as you like. Completion means every lesson, every weekly check and the final quiz.
Optional paid documents include an internship certificate, joining letter, evaluation report, project report, a letter of appreciation (merit only), an extra project or a 1:1 mentor call, and each carries a QR code and number you can check at /verification. Colleges can see how to use it at /internships/colleges. Learners aged 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian's consent, and under 13 cannot join. Take the free PLC and electrical troubleshooting course alongside it.
Pay, credit and what to expect
In the UK, minimum wage depends on whether you are a worker, not on the label 'intern', with exemptions such as required course placements of up to a year (read 16 October 2026). NACE argues all US internships should be paid (read 16 October 2026). In India, the AICTE portal shows stipends in the posting. A free training programme is a different category from an internship that is a job, and should say so.
Whatever route you choose, the same rule applies: get the tasks, dates and any fee in writing, check the organisation yourself, and keep evidence of what you built.

Questions
Where can electrical engineering students find genuine internships?
Start with your college placement cell, the AICTE National Internship Portal in India, your university careers service in the UK and US, and company careers pages you find yourself. A free online programme can fill gaps between placements, but it is training, not employment.
Should I pay a fee for an internship?
Not to a company or a portal. The AICTE portal says applying is free and anyone charging to apply through it is a scam. A college may charge its own course fee for an internship run as part of a course, which is a separate matter: ask the college what the fee covers.
Can electrical engineering students do an online internship?
Partly. Design review, schematic reading, PLC logic in a simulator, calculations and reports can be done online. Panel wiring by hand, live testing and site work cannot. An online internship builds the logic and documentation side, and on-site experience comes from placements.
What skills get an EEE student shortlisted?
Reading electrical drawings, basic PLC programming, an understanding of safe isolation and testing, and a project you can explain. Employers hire for what you can show, so one finished project with a test sheet beats a list of courses.
How long is an internship?
On the AICTE portal, durations run from 1 to 4 weeks, 1 to 6 months, or longer. Our free PLC Programming Internship lets you choose any length from 1 week to 24 months, starting from today, and change the plan later.
Is the free PLC internship employment?
No. It is training, not employment, and it pays no stipend. It is free to join, with no fee ever, and fully online. Optional documents such as an internship certificate are paid add-ons, each verified at /verification by QR code and number.
