Remote internships for engineering students are online placements where the work is something an engineer can do from a laptop: design, simulation, programming, calculations, drawing review and documentation. They do not include hands-on wiring or site work. A good one has written tasks, a start and end date, someone who reviews your work, and no fee. This post covers what can genuinely be done remotely, how to find a legitimate one, and how to avoid the scams.
Most guidance on remote internships is written for software students, and most scam warnings are written for US campuses. Engineering students in India, the UK and the US need an answer that fits their own situation. We start with the work, because that is what decides whether a remote internship is worth your time.
What engineering work really happens in remote internships
Engineering is hands-on, so be sceptical of any remote offer that promises the full job. Be equally sceptical of anyone who says nothing technical can be done online. The honest answer is in between.

| Area | What a remote intern can do | What stays on site |
|---|---|---|
| Automation | Write and test PLC logic in a simulator, document I/O lists | Wiring, real sensors, commissioning |
| Electrical design | Review schematics, draw, check against a standard | Panel build, testing live equipment |
| Quality | Write test sheets, check reports | Witnessing a real test |
| Reporting | Project reports, handover documents | Collecting field data |
PLC programming is one of the better fits, because the logic can be tested against a virtual machine. Remote PLC programming jobs looks at where that skill leads, and what a commissioning engineer does explains the on-site part that remote work cannot replace.
How to find remote internships for engineering students that are legitimate
Start with sources that have rules. In India, the AICTE National Internship Portal, run under the Ministry of Education, says registration, applying, shortlisting and the completion certificate are free, that stipends are shown in the posting and paid monthly, that durations run from 1 to 4 weeks, 1 to 6 months or longer, and that its certificates carry a QR code for verification. It also gives a helpline on 011-29581423 (page read 16 October 2026). A news report of 15 September 2026 lists live portal postings for electrical and mechanical roles, including an onsite three-month electrical engineer internship in Gurugram, which shows that many portal posts are on site, not remote (read 16 October 2026).
In the UK and US, your university careers service is usually the best first stop. TARGETjobs says a virtual internship is done digitally with online training, project work and video check-ins, is as valid as an in-person one if well structured, and should normally be paid. It adds that free self-paced 'virtual internship' courses give a certificate but no paid work or personalised feedback (page read 16 October 2026). NACE, the US body, describes an internship as experiential learning with a written position description, learning goals, start and end dates, qualified supervision and feedback, whether in person, remote or hybrid (page read 16 October 2026).
Use those two descriptions as your test. If an offer has none of those features, it is probably not an internship, whatever it is called.

Scam signs for remote offers
Remote offers are easier to fake, because there is no office to visit. The UK government's seven signs of job scams apply directly: vague adverts, unclear contact details, pay that does not fit, an offer with no interview, requests for money for training, uniforms or checks, a company or email you cannot verify, and overseas domains that need extra research (page read 16 October 2026).
Ohio State's engineering career service lists the signs students miss: a generic sender address, early requests for personal or financial information, urgency, vague duties and unrealistic pay. It says never to pay for training, software or materials, to verify through the company's official site and contact details you find yourself, and to screenshot, stop replying and report (page read 16 October 2026).
In India, a news report of 23 September 2026 says the AICTE portal's terms were updated on 15 September 2026 to bar organisations from charging students, and names off-portal Google Forms, WhatsApp, payment links, link shorteners, personal UPI IDs and requests for Aadhaar or card photos as red flags. It says that if you have paid, you should call 1930 within 24 hours and file a report at cybercrime.gov.in (Career India, read 16 October 2026). That is a secondary news source, so confirm the current steps with the portal or your college.
The video below covers common internship scams from an Indian student's point of view. It comes from a coding school, so the examples lean towards software, but the habits it teaches apply to engineering offers too.
Time zones, hours and pay
Ask three questions before you accept any remote internship. How long does it last, and what are the dates? What do you have to do each week, and who reviews it? And is there pay, or a fee? In the UK, minimum wage turns on whether you are a worker, not on the word 'intern' (see the GOV.UK guidance, read 16 October 2026). A programme that is training and not employment is a different thing from a job, and it should say so.
| Question | A good answer | A warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| What are the dates? | Written start and end | 'Flexible, we will tell you' |
| Who reviews my work? | A named person or a stated check | Nobody |
| What does it cost? | Nothing to join | A fee for a place or a kit |
| Is it employment? | Stated plainly either way | Unclear |
If a remote internship asks you to be online at fixed times in another time zone, check that you can. Self-paced programmes avoid this, but they give less feedback.
A free, remote-by-design option
The free PLC Programming Internship is fully online, so it works from any country. It is free to join, with no fee to join, ever. You choose any length from 1 week to 24 months, start from today, and can change the plan later. It is training, not employment, and it pays no stipend. It is issued by Wartens Ltd, a UK company.
Eight weeks of short lesson cards with diagrams and videos begin with the PLC scan cycle and move through ladder start/stop with a seal-in, timers and counters, Structured Text, and testing a machine before handover. The last week is a client brief with a mini project. Short weekly checks and a final quiz are there to help you learn, and you can retry them as often as you like.
Practice is optional and also remote. EDWartens Lab is free with a free account, runs in the browser, and the PLC lab includes a batch counter job on a packing line, a tank filling pump, a parcel sorter and more, in ladder, Structured Text or SFC. Each job ends in a numbered factory acceptance test that runs automatically.

Be clear about what it cannot do. It is a simulation. It cannot teach crimp quality, cable routing, real electrical noise or real hazards. The companies in the lab's work orders are fictional. It is a way to build logic skills and a record of work, not a replacement for site experience.
Documents are optional paid add-ons: an internship certificate, a joining letter, an evaluation report, a project report, a letter of appreciation (merit only), an extra project, or a 1:1 mentor call. Printed or framed copies are for India addresses only. Each carries a QR code and a number that anyone can check at /verification. For colleges that want to assign it to students, see /internships/colleges. The free electrical fundamentals course is a sensible warm-up.
Make a remote internship count on your CV
TARGETjobs advises you to state that the internship was virtual, finish everything, ask for feedback and record your results (page read 16 October 2026). Follow that. Under a heading such as 'Online training, PLC programming', list the tools you used, the project you built, and the test it passed. ATS-friendly resumes for automation engineers shows where to put it, and automation training for fresh graduates explains what employers look for next.
Keep a simple log as you go: the date, what you did, and what came back. At the end it takes ten minutes to turn that log into a CV entry and an interview story. Without it, most people forget what they did in the first month. Engineering interviewers often ask for one specific problem you solved, and a log gives you three or four to choose from.
A remote internship is not a lesser internship if it has structure and output. It is a lesser one if it has neither. Check for both before you say yes.

Questions
Can engineering internships be done remotely?
Some parts can. PLC programming against a simulator, schematic and drawing review, calculations, testing documents and reports all work online. Hands-on wiring, site commissioning and anything needing the physical machine cannot, so a remote internship is usually the design and logic side of the job.
Do I have to pay for a remote internship?
You should not pay to get a genuine placement. The AICTE portal in India says applying is free, and UK government and US university guidance both warn against paying for training or kit. Optional extras, such as a paid document, are different, if they are clearly optional.
What are the red flags of a fake remote internship?
Vague adverts, a free-mail contact address, an offer with no interview, requests for money or ID photos, pressure to decide quickly, and a company you cannot find yourself. Each of these appears in UK government or university scam guidance.
How do I verify the company?
Look it up yourself, never through the link you were sent. In the UK, check Companies House. Then find the company's official site and contact details independently, and call or write to ask whether the offer exists. Do this before you share any personal data.
Will employers value a remote internship?
They value what you can show. Careers guidance says a well-structured virtual internship is as valid as an in-person one. List the tools you used and the output you produced, and say plainly that it was remote.
Is our free remote PLC internship a job?
No. The free PLC Programming Internship is training, not employment, and it pays no stipend. It is free to join, fully online and runs from 1 week to 24 months. It works from any country, with no time zone to match.
