Virtual Internship: Worth It? How to Make It Count

What a virtual internship is, how it differs from virtual work experience and a job simulation, whether employers value it, and how to list it on a CV so it counts.

Virtual Internship: Worth It? How to Make It Count

A virtual internship is an internship done online: you receive training and projects digitally, work from home, and check in with a supervisor by video or message. The term is used loosely, so some programmes called virtual internships are really short job simulations or a few days of virtual work experience. This post sorts the three, says whether employers value them, and shows how to make one count on a CV.

The sources here are UK university careers services, TARGETjobs, Prospects Luminate, NACE and the UK government. We found no independent survey comparing how employers rate virtual and in-person internships, so this post makes no claim about percentages. Where a provider makes its own claim, we say so.

What a virtual internship is, and what it is not

TARGETjobs describes a virtual internship as one done digitally, with online training, project work and video check-ins, and says it is as valid as an in-person one if it is well structured. It also says virtual internships should normally be paid, and that free self-paced 'virtual internship' courses give a certificate but no paid work or personalised feedback (page read 16 October 2026).

That gives a useful boundary. Structure, tasks and feedback make it an internship. A certificate alone does not.

The video below is from Virtual Internships, a company that sells paid virtual internship programmes. It is a fair short introduction to the idea, and we use it with that disclosure: this provider has a commercial interest in the term.

Virtual internship or virtual work experience?

In the UK the two terms overlap. The University of Manchester's careers service says virtual work experience runs from hours to days, describes Forage's free simulations as about five to six hours with a certificate, and Springpod as about ten hours over two weeks, and says they are useful for a CV and for interviews. It also notes that the 'three times more likely to be hired' figure on those pages is Forage's own claim, so treat it as marketing (page read 16 October 2026).

Forage itself says its job simulations are free, self-paced and end in a certificate, last 30 minutes to four or five hours, and cover more than 250 simulations from over 90 employers, including a robotics and controls simulation in its engineering category (page read 16 October 2026). They are a good first look. They are not a supervised placement.

A rough rule: hours means a simulation, days means work experience, weeks and supervision mean an internship.

What makes a virtual internship work

Prospects Luminate says virtual placements work when interns get defined, real work, regular one-to-one meetings, contact with the team, and room to make mistakes, and that they fail when they become box-ticking (page read 16 October 2026). NACE's definition of an internship is similar: a written position description, learning goals, start and end dates, qualified supervision and feedback, whether in person, remote or hybrid (page read 16 October 2026).

Use these lists as your test before you apply. If a programme cannot tell you who reviews your work, it is closer to a course.

Do employers value a virtual internship?

The honest answer is: it depends on what you did. TARGETjobs calls a well-structured one as valid as an in-person one, and the Manchester careers service says virtual experience helps in applications and interviews. Neither source claims it replaces site work for roles that need it. For an engineering student, a virtual internship that produced something you can show is stronger than one that produced only a certificate.

That is also why we suggest finishing, not sampling. A finished project with a test result gives an interviewer something to ask about. A list of started programmes does not.

Pay and the law

Whether an internship should be paid depends on the facts. UK government guidance says the minimum wage turns on whether you are a 'worker', not on the label 'intern' or 'unpaid'. It lists exemptions, including required course placements of up to a year, school-age work experience, pure shadowing and genuine charity volunteering, and says you cannot sign away the right (page read 16 October 2026). NACE argues all internships should be paid and cites its 2022 survey data that paid interns averaged more job offers than unpaid ones, which is US data (page read 16 October 2026).

A training programme that is not employment is different. If one is free to join, it should say so clearly, say what it is, and say whether there is any pay. If it does not, ask.

A free, online example for engineers

The free PLC Programming Internship is a fully online training programme. It is free to join, with no fee to join, ever, and all eight weeks, the weekly checks and the final quiz are free. It is training, not employment, and it pays no stipend. It is issued by Wartens Ltd, a UK company. Learners aged 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian's consent, and under 13 cannot join.

You choose any length from 1 week to 24 months, start from today, and change the plan later. The eight weeks use short lesson cards with diagrams and videos: the PLC scan cycle, ladder start/stop with a seal-in, timers and counters, Structured Text, and testing a machine before handover. The last week is a client brief with a mini project. Short weekly checks and a final quiz help you learn, and you can retry them as often as you like. Completion means every lesson, every weekly check and the final quiz.

Practice is optional. EDWartens Lab is free with a free account and runs in your browser. The PLC lab has eight machines, including a parcel sorter, and you can program them in ladder, Structured Text or SFC. The machine responds in 2D and in 3D, and each job ends in a numbered factory acceptance test that runs automatically.

Documents are optional paid add-ons: an internship certificate, a joining letter, an evaluation report, a project report, a letter of appreciation (merit only), an extra project, or a 1:1 mentor call. Printed or framed copies are for India addresses only. Each document has a QR code and a number that anyone can check at /verification. Say what it is: a certificate of completion for a training programme, verified at that link, not a vendor credential.

How to make a virtual internship count

TARGETjobs advises you to state on your CV that the internship was virtual, finish everything, ask for feedback and record your results (page read 16 October 2026). Add to that: keep the output, and keep a link to check any document.

Employers read hundreds of CVs, and the honest wording above takes the same space as the vague kind. It also protects you in an interview, where one question about who you reported to will show whether the entry was what it claimed to be. A short, exact line followed by a link to verify it is stronger than a long, loose one.

For the CV itself, ATS-friendly resumes for automation engineers shows the layout, and engineering portfolio from course projects shows how to present the work. If you are comparing free options, what free courses with certificates really cost is a useful companion. For finishing what you start, see how to finish a free online engineering course. To build something worth showing, the free Factory IO virtual commissioning course is a good project base.

A virtual internship is worth your time when it has real tasks, some feedback and an output you can show. It is worth much less when it is a certificate with nothing behind it.

Questions

What is a virtual internship?

A virtual internship is an internship done online. TARGETjobs describes it as digital training, project work and video check-ins. It differs from a short job simulation because someone sets tasks, you work over weeks or months, and you get feedback along the way.

Do employers value virtual internships?

Careers guidance says a well-structured virtual internship is as valid as an in-person one. We found no independent employer survey comparing the two, so do not trust a single percentage. What helps most is clear output and honest wording on your CV.

What is the difference between a virtual internship and virtual work experience?

Terms overlap. The University of Manchester describes virtual work experience as lasting hours to days, with free simulations of about five to six hours and others of about ten hours over two weeks. A virtual internship usually runs longer, with regular supervision.

Are virtual internships paid?

Often they should be. TARGETjobs says virtual internships should normally be paid, and NACE says all internships should be. Free self-paced courses are different: they give a certificate but no paid work. Always ask what costs money and what pays.

How do I list a virtual internship on my CV?

Say that it was virtual, name the organisation, give the dates, list tools and results, and add a link where the document can be verified. Be exact about its type. 'Online training programme' is honest wording for a programme that is not employment.

Is our free PLC internship a virtual internship?

It is a free, fully online training programme in PLC programming. It is not employment and pays no stipend. It is free to join, runs from 1 week to 24 months, and has weekly checks and a final quiz. Optional paid documents are verified at /verification.
