AI AGENTS INTERNSHIP

AI Agents Internship Online: What You Build

What is an AI agent, and what do you build in an agents internship? Start with a workflow, add a model and tools, then test it and keep a person in charge.

AI Agents Internship Online: What You Build

An AI agent is software that can plan steps and use tools to reach a goal, where a chatbot only answers. An AI agents internship online teaches you to build one in small steps: a workflow in n8n, a language model inside it, tools it may call, documents it may read, and a person who approves the risky step. The first 4 weeks are free.

One fact about our own programme, so you can judge everything here fairly. The EDWartens internships are training, not employment. The first 4 weeks are free, with no fee to join, and finishing them earns a free certificate of completion with a QR code anyone can scan to verify it. Continuing past week 4 is paid, and so is the graded Internship Certificate (included from 24 weeks); prices are shown in your own currency before you pay. There is no stipend, and we do not promise a job, an interview or a placement.

What is an AI agent, in plain words?

Week 1 gives the plain version. An agent runs a loop: it looks at a goal, decides a step, uses a tool, reads the result, and decides again until it stops. It has four parts you can name, and you learn to tell automation from an agent: automation follows fixed steps, and an agent chooses. The worked example is a refund request, where some steps are ordinary software and some need judgement.

The lab task A safe agent starts the same way: you read the refund ticket and list which steps ordinary software does and which need judgement. Knowing where not to use a model is half the skill, and it keeps your first agent small enough to test.

What do you build in an AI agents internship?

Week 2 is automation basics with n8n: trigger, action, output, the canvas, nodes as a graph, items and JSON, run then read the output, and webhooks and APIs. n8n publishes documentation for its workflow tool (page read 18 October 2026), and the free community edition is what the practice uses. Week 3 connects a language model to a workflow: an AI step is one step among many, four parts of a good prompt, predictable output, and testing before you trust.

Week 4 is tools and function calling: the model asks and your app runs, descriptions travel as JSON, a tool description has four parts, does it choose the right tool, guardrails around tools, and read tools versus write tools. The lab task Prompt to spec makes you require exact JSON with set keys, so the next step can test each field, and run it on ten emails, one of which hides an instruction.

Why does the course keep returning to safety?

Because an agent that can act can also act wrongly. OWASP lists the main risks for applications built on large language models, including prompt injection (page read 18 October 2026), and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework describes how organisations map, measure and manage AI risk (page read 18 October 2026). The course does not teach you the documents. It builds the habits they point at: limit what a tool can do, treat input as untrusted, and put a person in front of anything that cannot be undone.

Weeks 5 to 8 are paid, and they are where this shows. Week 5 is retrieval, so agents read your documents: chunks, embeddings and search by meaning, sources, the right to refuse, and finding where a wrong answer broke. Week 6 is multi-step agents and human approval: from a goal to a plan, a loop that needs a stop, where a human must approve, what the approver sees, and never sending twice.

How do you test an agent?

With a set of cases, run again after every change. Week 7 covers why an agent needs a test set, how people evaluate agents, tokens and what a run costs, limits and guardrails, bad input and injection, and testing after every change. Week 8 builds an agent end to end: one small task, the five parts joined, ten cases run and fixed, a release check, and a one-page design note. The checked task Answers with sources (week 5) trains the habit of citing what the answer came from.

What do you need, and what can you show?

A laptop, a browser, and free tools: the n8n community edition, a free chat assistant and Google Colab. You do not need to be a programmer to start, though basic Python helps later. Afterwards you can show a working workflow, a prompt that returns valid JSON, an agent with an approval step, and your ten test cases. Describe them as training builds, and never connect them to real customer data.

What do you do each day?

A remote internship day here is five small steps. Nothing is timed.

  1. Check in. Say hello to the simulated team and see what is planned for today. The colleagues are simulated and labelled as such.
  2. Learn. Read a few short lessons on workflows, tools and approval steps. Each lesson takes a few minutes.
  3. Today's practice. Answer a few quick questions on what you read, with the reason shown after each one.
  4. Lab practical. Open the AI Workbench and build or test a small automation.
  5. End-of-day update. Write two lines on what you did and what is next.

Which three lab practicals will you do?

Three of the practicals, by name. Each opens in a browser lab, and each is optional practice that never holds you back.

  • Prompt to spec (AI Workbench, week 3)
  • Answers with sources (AI Workbench, week 5)
  • A safe agent (AI Workbench, week 8)

Questions

What is an AI agents internship?

A training internship where you learn what an AI agent is and build one step by step: automation workflows in n8n, a language model, tools and function calling, retrieval from documents, and a multi-step agent with a human approval step.

Do I need to know machine learning first?

No. You do not need to be a programmer. You start with what an agent is, then build simple workflows, then add a language model and tools one step at a time.

What is the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent?

A chatbot answers. An agent can plan steps and use tools. Week 1 teaches what an agent is, and the course adds a human approval step so you see where a person must stay in charge.

Can I do an agentic AI internship as a student?

Yes. It suits students of computer science, IT, electronics, commerce and management. The first 4 weeks are free and earn a free certificate of completion; continuing is paid, and it is training, not employment.

How do I test whether my agent is reliable?

The course has a week on testing, costs and safety, and a checked AI Workbench task, A safe agent, where the lab checks your work against a brief. You also keep a set of test cases and run them after every change.
