AI in HR Internship Online: Fair and Private Use

An AI in HR internship online teaches where an assistant helps an HR team and where a person must decide: role descriptions, interview guides, onboarding plans, feedback and people analytics. It also teaches the risks, bias and privacy first. You do not need to code, and every example uses invented people.

One fact about our own programme, so you can judge everything here fairly. The EDWartens internships are training, not employment. The first 4 weeks are free, with no fee to join, and finishing them earns a free certificate of completion with a QR code anyone can scan to verify it. Continuing past week 4 is paid, and so is the graded Internship Certificate (included from 24 weeks); prices are shown in your own currency before you pay. There is no stipend, and we do not promise a job, an interview or a placement.

How is AI used in HR work?

Week 1 starts with where AI already shows up in HR, three myths and the facts, and a sorting exercise on your own tasks. The line the course draws is the same all the way through: AI drafts, a person decides. It also makes you ask a hard question of any tool that says it removes bias, and own, record and review what you use.

Week 2 is prompting for HR work: role, task, context, format and checks, improving a draft in a second message, weak prompt against strong prompt, and stripping personal data first. Week 3 covers recruitment: what a good role description holds, words that quietly keep people away, must-have against nice-to-have, checking a draft for bias by comparing rates, and screening as support, not a verdict.

Week 4 covers interviews and onboarding: the structured interview guide, scoring notes that make answers comparable, what the assistant drafts and what a person does, a first-week plan, and onboarding from offer to month one. Those four weeks are the free part.

What are the risks of using AI in hiring?

The main one is that a tool can repeat an unfairness at speed. A model trained on past decisions can learn the pattern of those decisions, including the unfair ones. The lab task Check the AI's work: HR sits in week 3, next to a lesson on checking a draft for bias by comparing rates, so you meet the effect in numbers rather than only hear about it.

Privacy is the second risk. The ICO publishes guidance on AI and data protection (page read 18 October 2026), and NIST's AI Risk Management Framework describes how to map and manage the risks of AI more generally (page read 18 October 2026). The course does not give legal advice. It teaches a working habit: strip personal data first, decide how sensitive the detail is, record the tool, and tell candidates when a tool is used.

What do weeks 5 to 8 add?

These weeks are paid. Week 5 covers performance, learning and engagement: where AI helps with reviews, balanced feedback (situation, behaviour, impact), AI in learning and development, spotting vague or biased wording, and asking whether training worked. Week 6 covers people analytics basics: a few numbers that matter, twenty basic HR numbers, attrition on average headcount, the four levels of analytics, and questioning the number before acting.

Week 7 is bias, fairness, privacy and the law in plain words: where bias comes from, proxies (neutral signals with unfair results), three safeguards that work, and the rules in plain words. The checked Fairness check is here. Week 8 is a mini project: an HR AI playbook with approved and banned uses, data rules and sign-off points, and five tested prompts. The checked task Privacy first closes the course.

What can you show afterwards?

A role description you improved and checked for bias, an interview guide, an onboarding plan, a small analytics write-up, and a playbook. Label them as training work on invented people, and share the free certificate of completion for weeks 1 to 4. Do not claim to have screened or hired real candidates, and do not describe the internship as HR experience in a company.

What do you do each day?

A remote internship day here is five small steps. Nothing is timed.

  1. Check in. Say hello to the simulated team and see what is planned for today. The colleagues are simulated and labelled as such.
  2. Learn. Read a few short lessons on role descriptions, interviews and fair use of AI. Each lesson takes a few minutes.
  3. Today's practice. Answer a few quick questions on what you read, with the reason shown after each one.
  4. Lab practical. Open the AI Workbench and draft with an assistant, then check for bias and privacy.
  5. End-of-day update. Write two lines on what you did and what is next.

Which three lab practicals will you do?

Three of the practicals, by name. Each opens in a browser lab, and each is optional practice that never holds you back.

  • Check the AI's work: HR (AI Workbench, week 3)
  • Fairness check (AI Workbench, week 7)
  • Privacy first (AI Workbench, week 8)

Questions

How is AI used in HR and recruitment in this internship?

For role descriptions and screening support, interviews and onboarding, performance and learning, and people analytics, always with a person deciding. The tool supports the work; it never gives a verdict on a person.

Can an HR student do an AI internship without coding?

Yes. You do not need to have worked in HR or to know AI. You learn the everyday HR tasks first, then where an assistant helps.

What are the risks of using AI in hiring?

The course has a week on bias, fairness and privacy, and a checked AI Workbench fairness check. Practice uses invented candidates and staff only, never real people.

Is there a free HR internship that covers AI tools?

The first 4 weeks are free and earn a free certificate of completion. Continuing past 4 weeks is paid. It is training, not employment, so there is no stipend and no job is promised.

What will I make in the AI in HR internship?

An HR AI playbook with data rules in the week 8 mini project, and a checked task on verifying the AI's work for HR.
