Civil and structural engineer

The design office and site toolkit: ETABS and SAFE for concrete buildings, STAAD.Pro for frames and steel sheds, quantity surveying from drawings to the final account, site QA/QC for concrete, steel and earthworks, and a programme in Microsoft Project.

You start with the first course. The next one is added when you are halfway through the one you are on.

The roadmap

5 courses, in this order

  1. Step 1: ETABS and SAFE: Building Analysis and Design

Adds: How a structural engineer models, loads, analyses and checks a reinforced concrete building in ETABS and designs its slabs and foundations in SAFE: grids and stories, materials and cracked sections, load patterns and combinations, equivalent static and response spectrum seismic load, modal checks, drift and P-delta, beam, column and shear wall design, then slab strips, punching shear, deflection, soil springs and footings, with every result checked by hand.

    • Intermediate
    • 15 modules
    • 13h 57m of video
  2. Step 2: STAAD.Pro: Structural Analysis and Design

Adds: How a structural engineer builds, loads, analyses and checks frames and trusses in STAAD.Pro and runs steel and concrete design: units and the command file, structure wizard and members, sections, supports and releases, dead, live, wind and seismic loads, load combinations, linear, P-delta and modal analysis, then code checks, concrete reinforcement, connections, foundations and the calculation report, with every result checked by hand on an industrial portal-frame shed and a three-storey steel frame.

    • Intermediate
    • 14 modules
    • 13h 1m of video
  3. Step 3: Quantity Surveying and Building Estimation

Adds: Turn architectural and structural drawings into measured quantities and a priced bill of quantities: the measurement rules by family (RICS NRM, POMI, CESMM4), take-off of substructure, concrete frame, formwork, reinforcement and bar bending schedules, blockwork, finishes, doors, windows and roofing, bill layout and preambles, rate build-up in cost units, tender comparison, cost planning, variations, interim valuations and the final account, all worked on one two-storey clinic.

    • Beginner
    • 13 modules
    • 14h 13m of video
  4. Step 4: Civil QA/QC Engineer: Concrete, Steel and Earthworks

Adds: How civil site quality works on a building project: the project quality plan, inspection and test plans, method statements, submittals and requests for inspection, then concrete from mix to cube result, reinforcement, formwork, steel erection, earthworks and compaction, blockwork and waterproofing, non-conformance reports, calibration and handover, all worked on one hospital project.

    • Beginner
    • 13 modules
    • 8h 26m of video
  5. Step 5: Microsoft Project for Planning Engineers

Adds: Plan and control a construction, MEP or plant project in Microsoft Project desktop: calendars and WBS, task types and effort-driven scheduling, dependencies, constraints and the critical path, resources and levelling, baselines and progress, earned value in cost units, views, custom fields and reports, and handing a schedule to Primavera P6 users with ProjectLibre as the free option.

Questions

Questions about this path

Is the Civil and structural engineer free?

Yes. Every course in the path is free in full: lessons, notes, practice tasks and the final assessment. The only paid item is the optional EDWartens Certificate of Completion for each course.

What happens when I join the path?

You are enrolled on the first course straight away. The next course is added to your account when you are about halfway through the one you are on, so you never face a pile of unstarted courses. Each course keeps its own progress, notes and final.

In what order should I take the courses?

In the order listed: each course is placed after the ones it builds on. Every course also stands alone, so you can open any of them from the list.

Do I get one certificate for the whole path?

No. Certificates are per course, issued when you pass that course's final assessment, and you only buy one if you want it. Finishing every course gives you one optional, verifiable certificate for each.

How long will it take?

The video alone is about 57h 32m. Notes, practice tasks and the finals take extra time, and you go at your own pace.
